The CMC estimated in June that the financial impact of the attacks on the two retailers was between £270 million and £440 million.

The investigation into the JLR attack is being led by the National Crime Agency but few details have emerged on who was behind the incident. The CMC estimate did not include assumptions about whether JLR had paid a ransom or not.

Martin said companies tended to focus their resources on protecting themselves against data breaches since they have a legal obligation to protect customer data.

But cases like JLR underscore the increasing risks of attackers not just stealing data but destroying critical networks supporting a company’s operations, and the high costs associated with such attacks.

While state actors have not been behind recent attacks on M&S and other retailers, Martin warned that there was an increasing “geopolitical vulnerability” and risk that hostile nation states could attack UK businesses for non-financial reasons.

“It is now clear not just that criminal disruptive attacks are the worst problem in cybersecurity right now, but they’re a playbook to hostile nation states on how to attack us,” Martin said at a separate speech in London on Wednesday. “So cybersecurity has become economic security. And economic security is national security.”

Last week, the UK National Cyber Security Centre also warned that state actors continued to pose “a significant threat” to Britain and global cyber security, citing the risks posed by China, Russia, and others.

According to an annual review by NCSC, the UK had suffered 204 “nationally significant [cyber] incidents” in the 12 months to August 2025, compared with 89 in the same period a year earlier.

The term is used to describe the three most serious types of incidents as defined by UK law enforcement.

When will Jaguar Land Rover restart production? “No one actually knows.”

Jaguar Land Rover’s dealers and suppliers fear the British carmaker’s operations will take another few months to normalize after a cyber attack that experts estimate could wipe more than £3.5 billion off its revenue.

JLR, which is owned by India’s Tata Motors, had been forced to shut down its systems and halt production across its UK factories since August 31, wreaking havoc across the country’s vast supply chain involving roughly 200,000 workers.

JLR on Tuesday said it would extend its production halt until at least next Wednesday as it continued its investigation. In a statement, the company also cautioned that “the controlled restart of our global operations… will take time.”

If JLR cannot produce vehicles until November, David Bailey, professor at University of Birmingham, estimated that the group would suffer a revenue hit of more than £3.5 billion while it would lose about £250 million in profits, or about £72 million in revenue and £5 million in profits on a daily basis.

With annual revenues of £29 billion in 2024, JLR will be able to absorb the financial costs but Bailey warned the consequences would be bigger for the smaller sized companies in its supply chain. JLR declined to comment.

The cyber attack comes at a crucial period for the UK carmaker when it is going through a controversial rebranding of its Jaguar brand and an expensive shift to all-electric vehicles by the end of the decade. Even before the latest incident, people briefed on the matter have said the company was facing delays with launching its new electric models.

“They are clearly in chaos,” said one industry executive who works closely with JLR, while another warned that “no one actually knows” when production would resume.

“If there is a major financial hit, the CEO will look for significant cost savings to try and recover some of that, so that could hit both the production base in the UK but also its product development,” said Bailey.

Here’s how Jaguar will relaunch as an all-EV brand

MONACO—It may be hard to remember, but not too long ago, Jaguar made a very nice electric vehicle. The I-Pace arrived in 2018, and it was the only EV other than the bare-bones Chevy Bolt that could compete with a Tesla on range. It was great to drive, too. An electric replacement for the XJ sedan was meant to be next until it was canceled months before production was supposed to begin.

“I’d seen the car, it was a beautiful car, but when I look at the designs that we have now, when I look at the technology that we’ll bring in the vehicle, it’s night-and-day different,” said Rawdon Glover, managing director of Jaguar. “I think that previous car would have been sort of a segue into something else, where we’re doing a step change.”

And a step change is what Jaguar Land Rover CEO (and Glover’s boss) Thierry Bolloré wants for Jaguar: for it to move upmarket, the way Range Rover has. Tearing up the electric XJ was a bold step—it meant the only new electric Jaguars to debut from 2021 until 2025 would be the brand’s Formula E race cars.

But 2025 is getting close. Later this year, production of the XF, E-Pace, and F-Pace will all end, as will the I-Pace. The F-Pace production line at Solihull in the British midlands will be revamped to build the first of three models built on an all-new EV platform, Jaguar Electric Architecture. That first model will be a four-door electric GT, a space that’s about to get very competitive as the established Porsche Taycan is also joined by alternatives from Lotus and Polestar.

Jaguar is not quite ready to start talking specifics of that JEA platform, although Glover told me to expect about 400 miles of “real-world range” (700-plus miles, according to the WLTP test cycle) and a battery pack that can fast-charge to 80 percent in 15 minutes. I’ll admit, I’m looking forward to finding out more—Jaguar’s history has often featured financial troubles, but it’s also been jam-packed with innovation.

Formula E is making future Jaguars better EVs

I met with Glover on the day the team’s cars took a 1–2 victory on the streets of Monaco. They put on a good show—unlike Formula 1, Formula E cars can actually race around this place—three wide at times, and overtaking happens (occasionally, memorably, into a corner where most people think you can’t overtake).

The ePrix can’t quite compare to the F1 Grand Prix in terms of glamour, but it’s not too far off; the harbor had a decent complement of yachts packed with important sponsors in need of some VIP treatment. As an event to visit as a spectator, you’ll see better racing and have to battle smaller crowds if you choose the ePrix, not to mention save some euros in the process.
